It’s
impossible to talk about Granville Island without mentioning the food! The
centre of our gastronomic delight, and in fact, the centrepiece of the Island’s
shopping experience, is our Public Market, where tourists and locals alike
converge for an unrivalled
food-shopping experience among a vast selection of fresh specialty foods.
The Granville Island Public Market is
Vancouver’s hub of epicurean delight. Browse the exotic array of crisp,
garden-fresh produce which overflows each vendor’s stall—from luscious berries
in season, to delicate Japanese eggplant. Look for displays of fresh Coho salmon
and giant prawns on beds of ice. Breathe in the delicious scent of
just-from-the-oven bagels mixing with the aroma of freshly roasted coffee and
pungent cheeses from around the world.
The
Island’s community includes over 300 businesses, studios and facilities. The
Island has it's own Hotel
Granville Island Hotel a popular spot that has great dinning
options as well. The Island employs more than 2,500 people, and is home to
residents living in the Sea Village neighbourhood (floating homes on the
southeast end of Granville Island with water for a front yard in
Downtown Vancouver).
No matter what your craving may be, you won’t have to look very far to satisfy
it while visiting Granville Island. Cafes, pubs and restaurants beckon to
patrons with outdoor seating extending out onto old wooden piers on the water,
providing a meal with an upclose view of Vancouver’s scenic waterfront.
Granville Island is one of Vancouver's culinary hot spots, with a range of
dining options for every palette and pocketbook. From ethnic fast food in the
Market and frothy cappuccinos in tucked away cafés, to the freshest seafood and
game prepared at innovative restaurants and eateries, the exceptional service,
great dining rooms and outstanding views make Granville Island a favourite spot
for locals and visitors.
Shopping on Granville Island is anything but cookie-cutter. (Unless, of course,
that's what you're looking for!)
You'll find handcrafted shoes, tailor-made eyeglasses, and custom-built kayaks;
wooden musical instruments, high-craft blown glass, ceramic and woodwork
treasures; gardening gear, dragon things, leather crafts, fishing reels, and
one-of-a-kind toys: just a small spattering of what's in store for Island
shoppers.
Count on Granville Island's unpredictable and distinctive gifts for any
occasion!
Because it's in the middle of Vancouver, Granville
Island is easy to get to. Its location on the south shore under the Granville
Street Bridge affords many options. Whether by boat, by car, by bus, by bicycle
or on foot, your choices are many.
By Boat
The Aquabus runs from 7am to 10:30pm in the summer (8:30pm in winter). The
rainbow-coloured Aquabus (www.aquabus.bc.ca) travels around
False Creek with stops at the foot of
Hornby St., Stamp's Landing,
Yaletown (foot of Davie St.), and Science World.
By Car
Getting to Granville Island by car is easy since many main thoroughfares run
nearby, including the Granville St. Bridge above, and 4th Avenue to the south,
and Burrard St. to the west.
Since Granville Island is people-friendly, there are many pedestrians walking
about. While driving, please be aware of pedestrians, and watch for children.
A Note on Parking
Parking on Granville Island is limited. If you can, leave the car at home and
get to Granville Island by bus, boat, bicycle or on foot.
