Families
on a budget will quickly discover that St. Louis offers more free, major
attractions than any place outside the nation’s capital. A close-to-home drive
to this action-packed destination leads to a good deal at the end of the road.
The zoo,
art museum,
science center, history museum,
Anheuser-Busch Brewery,
Grant’s Farm and a host
of other stops won’t charge a penny for admission.More child-pleasing attractions call St. Louis home than you’ll have time to see on just one visit, including some of the top family sights in the nation. And this year, as gas prices fluctuate, it’s good to know that you can take a vacation that’s easy on the wallet. Planning a couples weekend or maybe a road trip with friends? TravelSmart – the nation’s oldest consumer travel newsletter – named St. Louis one of its “10 Safest, Culturally Most Fascinating Cities in the U.S.” St. Louis offers music, theater, shopping, dining and everything you need for a romantic reconnection or a getaway with your girlfriends. Visit the centerpiece of St. Louis – the Gateway Arch. America’s tallest man-made monument is a tribute to the opening of the American West, a sculpture, a history lesson or just a great time. Combine a tram ride to the top with a paddlewheel riverboat cruise, a giant-screen movie, a bike rental on the Riverfront Trail or even a sightseeing flight in the new Gateway Arch Helicopters. From your vantage point at the top of the Arch or back on solid ground, you’ll see a new energy in downtown St. Louis. More than $3.5 billion is being spent on new entertainment districts, casinos, loft condos and scores of new restaurants, retailers and hotels in renovated historic buildings. Outside of downtown, growth continues at St. Louis’ attractions in St. Louis City and St. Louis County where new sights and lodging are added on a regular basis. Getting around Downtown St. Louis is easy. The streets are laid out on a simple grid system. For major roads, the numbered streets run north/south and named streets running east/west. (Except for 5th St. which is Broadway and 12th St. which is Tucker Blvd.) Numbered streets start at the Riverfront. The numbers go up as you go further west. Market St. is the dividing line between north and south addresses. All address numbers on east/west streets correspond to the numbered cross street. All address numbers on north/south streets correspond to the number of blocks north or south of Market Street. Public transit and a multitude of parking lots and garages make visiting, living and doing business downtown convenient. |
