Aberdeen Centre Richmond

"When the Aberdeen Centre in Richmond was built back in 1989, the goal was to create the first truly Asian shopping experience in the Lower Mainland. The success  inspired them to look beyond cultures, to re-imagine and redefine a new type of retail and entertainment experience. One that embraces the best of East and West. A celebration of multiculturalism. To achieve this we are building a state-of-the-art shopping and entertainment complex triple the size of the original. My vision for the new Aberdeen Centre is to see it become Greater Vancouver pre-eminent cosmopolitan shopping destination. The first Asian/Western centre of its kind, anywhere".

As an alternative to Chinatown in Vancouver, the enclosed layout of Aberdeen Centre was a totally new concept in early 1990s. The mall was designed as an one-stop shopping with Asian themed retail stores, herbal tea shops, restaurants, cinema and bowling alley as well as continuous weekend entertainment. It was built to cater the blossoming Asian society in Richmond with rapid growth in skilful and rich Asian immigrants under the government policy since 1984.

Aberdeen Centre Richmond enabled the consumers to experience the Orient without the expense of an overseas flight. The mall was also named after a Hong Kong's famous tourist harbour - Aberdeen. It was the largest enclosed Asian retail centre in North America at that time, and other developers follow the concept and modeling. Then, the area around the neighbourhood of Aberdeen Centre has developed into the "Aberdeen District".

Open, Airy Showcase. The new Centre will be an architectural showcase where organic forms integrate with curved interior terraces. Three levels of shopping follow a gracefully curved central galleria anchored at one end by a massive amphitheatre-style Court. The ceiling is dominated by randomly sized skylights which will bathe everything in natural light. The open sight lines from every level allow you a clear view from the Food Court on the third level.

Outside, the Centre glass facade is composed of varying tints and types of glass lear, translucent and opaque. This brings the inside out, creating a dynamic display of lighting, colour, signage and reflections for a distinctive look day and night like a modern urban lantern. Curb side parking, generous sidewalks and trees throughout the six acre development set the stage for a dynamic urban neighbourhood shopping area.
