There is a unique romance about beach hotels. They are reminiscent of a bygone era when well-to-do travelers headed west to “take the waters,” stay at posh properties and lounge beachside sipping cocktails, whiling away the hours. Although Santa Monica itself has changed considerably since those early days, the aura of those resort properties lives on at a number of hotels in the city.
No hotel in the city is more than a few minutes from an abundance of
shopping, dining and attractions—including the city’s world-renowned beach.
Most guests will be within walking distance and those farther afield can use
the Big Blue Bus or the TIDE Shuttle, which loops along Ocean Avenue and
Main Street, for only 25 cents. Many mid-city hotels also provide shuttle
service; ask upon arrival.
Thirty-seven hotels, with a total of more than 3,500 rooms, range from luxury to boutique (and luxury boutique) and from beachfront to secluded—havens for the rich and famous, families, romantics, business and budget travelers alike. The five-month period from October through March is considered “value season” at many properties when rooms may be easier to book, the rates lower and crowds lighter. The weather, however, remains consistently predictable: sunny and warm.
