Downtown is within a 20-minute drive of most points on the
city's perimeter. It is so easy to get to because a number of major connector
routes are accessible from Downtown.
From the Calgary International Airport
It is a simple jaunt south on Deerfoot Trail to Memorial Drive. From there "City
Centre" signs will lead you the rest of the way.
From around the city
Public transit provides inter-connecting bus and light rail service throughout
the city.
www.calgarytransit.com
Once you arrive Downtown, you will find most of the things to do and see are
within walking distance or you can take:
A short ride on the light rail transit "free fare zone" on 7th
Avenue.
A walk through the world's largest indoor walkway system - the
+15 Walkway
|
The fastest way to become oriented is to take a trip to the top of the Calgary
Tower, where the entire city is spread out far below. The restaurant and lounge
in the observation deck rotate slowly, giving you a 360-degree view every few
minutes, so you never know what you will see next when you look out the window.
Calgary's Downtown is a shopping, entertainment, cultural and recreation centre
for Calgarians, and a tourist centre for more than 4.5 million visitors a year
Amidst the gleaming office towers are an eclectic mix of entertainment and
cultural destinations:
You will find it easy to get around once you recognize the six distinct
districts of Downtown. They feature some of the biggest and best in shopping and
attractions, and lots in between that should not be missed.
Olympic Plaza Cultural District
Beginning
at the east end of Stephen Avenue Walk (8th Avenue SW), the district features
the EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts, Olympic Plaza, Telus
Convention Centre, City Hall, Glenbow Museum, the Art Gallery of Calgary and
numerous private galleries. The creative atmosphere is enhanced by an assortment
of trendy restaurants, bars and cafés. Easy access to LRT and parking.
Downtown on 8th Shopping District
More
than 400 shops and services are connected by the +15 Walkway system (above
ground walkways) and Stephen Avenue Walk. The area's major mall retailers,
department stores (TD Square, Calgary Eaton Centre, Bankers Hall, Sears, The
Bay, Holt Renfrew and Penny Lane) and local merchants offer a complete range of
fashion, dining and specialty items.
Stephen Avenue Walk
Stephen Avenue Walk
is Calgary's only outdoor pedestrian mall. It spans from 1st Street SE to 4th
Street SW. Enjoy a selection of fine dining, art galleries, coffee bars and
retail shops in the beautiful historic setting.
Eau Claire Market
Eau Claire is a
favourite place to stroll, shop and savour. The pathways that wind through
Prince's Island Park and along the river form the recreational hub of Downtown.
The river walk, Barclay Parade and Eau Claire Festival Market offer a children's
play area, funky shops, restaurants, bars, cinemas and a fresh food marketplace.
There is a direct link to Stephen Avenue Walk via Barclay Mall (pedestrian
mall).
Chinatown
Neighbouring
Eau Claire, Chinatown provides another Calgarian cultural experience. The
Chinese Cultural Centre is the largest of its kind in North America and has a
stunning domed ceiling that is patterned after the Temple of Heaven in Beijing.
Complete your shopping and dining experience(s) at Dragon City Mall or any of
the street level shops and restaurants.
Penny Lane
Entertainment District
Located
around 8th Avenue at 5th Street SW, the area is home to an eclectic mix of
restaurants, pubs, retail shops and retro movie houses including Cowboys,
Ceili's, Sino, Indulge, Sears, Uptown Screen and Stage and the Globe Theatre. It
is also home to the Udderly Art Legacy Pasture in the Centennial Parkade +15.
